8. Son Of The Bride (2001, Argentina)

Original Title: El Hijo de la Novia Son of the Bride is a heart-warming movie written and directed by Juan José Campanella, one of Argentina's best filmmakers. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001, and although it did not win, it was a great representation of the Argentinian cinema industry, especially because of its touching story. The movie tells the story of Rafael, a restaurant owner that is going through a middle-life crisis. He lives a hectic routine, spending little time with his daughter, being in a messy relationship with a younger woman and not visiting his mother, who lives in a retirement home because of her Alzheimer condition, in over a year. When his father decides to marry his mother in the Church to make her teenager dreams come true, Rafael, although disagreeing with it, starts helping. However, he didn't imagine how complicated the things would turn out to be, or how much it would change his own life. Even though it is portraying a serious illness such as Alzheimer, the film manages to be funny and witty, especially because of Eduardo Blanco's character, Rafael's childhood friend who is the exact opposite of him. Ricardo Darin's and Héctor Alterio performances are also brilliant, and they are responsible for the most moving scenes in the movie. Son of the Bride is an inspiring tale that makes us reflect about life and about all the moments we miss for being too worried about banal, small things.
