Natalie Portman clearly enjoyed fighting giant monsters in Attack of the Clones, because she made a whole film about that in 2018.

Annihilation stars Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Gina Rodriguez as a group of scientists who must enter The Shimmer. No, not a cheesy nightclub, but rather an area surrounding a meteor that is mutating animal and plant life.

Portman and pals encounter all sorts of monsters whilst in The Shimmer, including a big crocodile-shark thing and an evil skeleton bear. Hooray!

The concept of Annihilation isn't anything new. Scientists working against the clock to find the reason behind an alien occurrence? That's the plot of thousands of movies. However, Annihilation does have things working in its favour.

First of all, the designs of its monsters are excellent. They're visually striking and extremely convincing, never straying into cartoonish.

Secondly, it provides very few concrete answers, leaving you to work them out for yourself.

And finally, most of the main characters are women. The entire team that enters The Shimmer are female, which is a welcome change from the ultra-macho alien-fighting movies of old.

So yeah, don't sleep on this one. Listen to Queen Amidala.
