10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Atlantis: The Lost Empire

1. It Was Actually Disney’s Most Progressive Movie In Years.

This is not to say Disney hadn’t progressed at all. Up until this point, we’d seen well-paced romances, creative animation techniques, experimental new genres, representation of different cultures and much more. But Atlantis cumulates all of this, and then goes even further.

First of all, Atlantis’s lead protagonist Milo is totally different to the usual male hero that we’re used to. Perfectly played by Michael J. Fox to give him that charmingly awkward persona, he’s not muscularly built, practically skilled or the typical hero that could instantly save the day.

But he’s all the more relatable for his great intelligence and gentle nature. And, not that this should make a difference, but Milo is Disney’s first animated male hero to wear glasses, which is a pretty cool fact.

The film’s secondary protagonist, Princess Kida, ia not someone who married into royalty to get her title, she was born into it. She’s clever, practical, powerful and multi-cultural. Additionally, the supporting cast is one Disney’s most diverse. A group varied in age, gender, occupation and race is refreshing to see, especially as the film was set in the year 1914.

It’s one of Disney’s bravest stories ever, moving into the sci-fi realm of movies and welcoming a flavour of steampunk in the aesthetics. The storytelling is complex, the themes are mature and there's an excellent lesson of working hard to achieve your dreams, no matter who you are.
