10 Misleading Movie Trailers That Scared You Off Amazing Movies
3. Hellboy
What The Trailer Sold You:
A movie about side character, Agent John Myers, joining some vague, underground government agency that protects the world from otherworldly creatures a la Men In Black. The trailer is literally one neuralizer away from looking like a less sanitary, more graphically spectacular version of the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones franchise. Also, there's something or someone called "Hellboy" in there somewhere.
What You Missed:
A Guillermo del Toro-led visual feast that just so happens to feature one of the most badass comic book characters of the modern age fighting Nazis and demons (and demon Nazis) in sewers and mausoleums.
It was certainly bold of this marketing team to gloss over the titular character of the movie altogether in favor of the generic Agent Myers and "his friends", when said character is a wonderfully complex, masterpiece creation. Ron Perlman as the blue collar, cigar-chomping, kitten-petting Hellboy is the reason to see this movie, but you would think he was the film's biggest detriment based on the advertising.
Luckily for those who made it past the so-so trailer, del Toro's affection for the character -- and the source material -- is evident throughout the movie. As it should be.
