10 More Awesome Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb
1. The Nice Guys
Shane Black's buddy comedy caper The Nice Guys had seemingly everything it needed to succeed - the plaudits of Shane Black, a filmmaker fresh off directing the mega-hit Iron Man 3, two popular leads in Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, and a mountain of rave reviews.
But even with its sensible $50 million budget, The Nice Guys made just $62.8 million globally, making it an undeniable flop and ensuring a planned sequel was promptly killed off.
Many pointed to the film's so-so marketing, which failed to fully emphasise the buddy comedy aspect, as well as the dubious commercial appeal of neo-noir movies, and the general decline of both comedy vehicles and mid-budget movies in general at the box office over the last decade.
This was a truly original movie with no IP attachments, and while many initially hoped word-of-mouth might propel it to modest success, it just didn't happen.
That it was an R-rated comedy and released within a few weeks of Captain America: Civil War, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and X-Men: Apocalypse surely didn't help it either.
