10 More Great Horror Movie Scenes When Evil Characters Turned Good
1. Dennis Farrell - Splinter
Toby Wilkins' body-horror Splinter opens with escaped convict and murderer Dennis and his junkie girlfriend Lacey taking a couple, Seth and Polly, hostage. After pulling into a gas station, they're besieged by a fungal parasite that turns its victims into spiky zombies.
From the first few minutes, Dennis proves to be a loose cannon, since he makes every wrong decision possible. He destroys the phone in the station so nobody can call for help. He ignores Lacey's warnings about the porcupine-like ghoul, which leads to her death. He then tries to drag Lacey's carcass into the station to save her, even though she's infected.
Despite Dennis' aggression and incompetence, he ultimately becomes the most reliable person of the trio. When a cop comes to arrest him, Dennis orders her to call for back-up, knowing she can't fight the zombies alone. Though this decision would guarantee Dennis being sent back to jail, he doesn't want to see another civilian die.
Dennis discovers the zombies are vulnerable to cold and uses this knowledge to save his new friends repeatedly. And when his arm gets ripped off, Dennis still acts like a badass, keeping the undead at bay.
After he becomes infected, you expect Dennis to go down in a blaze of glory, but he does one better. Before sacrificing himself to destroy the evil fungi, he gives Seth and Polly details for his bank account and asks them to give money to the wife of the man he fatally shot.
He may have been a scumbag to begin with, but Dennis proved to have a heart of gold by the end.
