Like Dario Argento's 1977 original, 2018's Suspiria centres around a prosperous dancing student who joins a prestigious dance academy, unaware it's a front for a witch's coven. The lead choreographer, Madame Blanc, has her proteges perform dance-like rituals, which they believe is part of the curriculum. Little do they know that Blanc is moulding them so they can serve her master, Helen Markos.

However, Blanc finds herself gravitating towards one student, Susie, encouraging her to take control rather than treating her as expendable.

When Markos insists that Susie be offered as a vessel for her own decaying body, Blanc intervenes to protect Susie. For her defiance, Markos’ followers slice at Blanc's head, nearly decapitating her. With nobody else to defend Susie, it looks like the matrons will have no trouble overpowering her, but in the end, Susie is revealed to be an incarnation of Mater Suspiriorum, the leader of all witches.

Even though Blanc has led many promising young girls to their doom, she couldn't bring herself to do the same to Susie. Her act of kindness paid off, since Susie executed all the matrons complicit in Markos' scheme, save for Blanc.
