10 MORE Great Horror Movies You'll Only Watch Once
5. The Vanishing
Even though the 1993 remake of The Vanishing is the inferior of the two films, it has more rewatchability since it doesn't leave its audience with soul-crushing dread by the end.
The original Vanishing opens with a couple, Rex and Saskia, pulling up to a service station, readying for their holiday. When Saskia suddenly disappears, the story cuts to three years later with Rex receiving postcards from her abductor, Raymond. When Rex confronts the kidnapper, he realises that getting his partner back isn't going to be as easy as he thought.
Raymond may be a straightforward villain, but he's fascinatingly disturbing. He's so profoundly malevolent, hearing him talking about his past crimes and lack of conscience makes every moment he's on-screen genuinely uncomfortable. Nevertheless, you'll want to stick it out, eager to see the adoring couple's reunion.
But that never happens.
In the end, it's revealed Raymond buried Saskia alive shortly after abducting her. Worse still, the movie concludes with Rex suffering the same fate.
Once you know Rex's entire quest was for nothing and would lead to his own slow death, all incentive to sit through The Vanishing a second time suitably vanishes.
