10 MORE Horror Movie Monsters That Shouldn’t Have Worked… But Did

6. The Oil Slick Monster - Creepshow 2

Although Creepshow 2 wasn't as well-received as its predecessor, there's one sequence that stands the test of time.

In The Raft storyline, college student Rachel ventures to a lake with her friends, oblivious that a tar-like organism resides in the water. Even though Stephen King penned the source material, a creature that resembles a dirty bedsheet doesn't sound like soul-stirring stuff.

However, the oil-slick monster's basic design works in its favour. Its lack of distinct features makes it impossible to categorise, leaning into that universal fear of the unknown.

But that's not all. The malevolent goo doesn't just attack Rachel's group but dissolves them. After the monster ensnares Rachel in its gloopy clutches, her friends are utterly powerless to save her, forcing them to look on while she melts away.

The friends become hysterical, knowing they can't leave their raft and swim back to shore without being liquified to death. Unless they come up with a plan, they'll inevitably meet the same fate as Rachel. Although the whole scenario is surreal, it feels hauntingly relatable, since it taps into a child-like fear of helplessness.

Despite the fact that the creators devised the most rudimentary design imaginable for the monster, it totally paid off.
