5. Chatterer - Hellraiser

Chatterer Hellraiser

In Hellraiser lore, anyone who solves the Lament Configuration will summon extra-dimensional sado-masochists called Cenobites. These entities are often composed of Butterball, the Female, the Chatterer, and their leader, Pinhead.

Even though Pinhead's soldiers tend to remain in the background, they've become iconic in their own way, especially the Chatterer. The deformed henchman is so-called due to his compulsion to constantly chatter his teeth.

Unlike Pinhead, there's no indication that the Chatterer can summon hooked chains or reshape reality. In fact, the Chatterer never kills anybody in the franchise. Instead, he just looks generically menacing and keeps smashing his teeth together.

And yet, the Chatterer's visual and audio design accentuates every scene involving the Cenobites. The Chatterer is often heard before the others are seen, making him come across like Pinhead's personal herald.

It's not just the noise that's freaky but the consistency, since the Chatterer never stops with that clicking-clanking sound. While Pinhead taunts and tortures his prey, the camera tends to fixate on the Chatterer or just his teeth, amplifying the discomfort.

Pinhead may be the face of Hellraiser, but the Chatterer is responsible for one of the most unsettling sounds in horror.
