The Ritual follows Rob and his friends as they hike through Scandinavia to honour their murdered pal Rob. On their journey, they stumble upon a cult that intends to sacrifice them to a Norse troll, Moder.

Though it's hinted at that the group is being pursued by a malevolent force, Moder remains unseen for the longest time. He plays psychological tricks on Rob, forcing him to relieve his greatest regrets. These moments are clearly eerie, but it's not clear whether Moder will physically appear or if he has a corporeal body at all. On top of that, Moder is built up as the most terrifying entity imaginable, so it'll be anticlimactic if he doesn't look absolutely jaw-dropping.

However, the god-like entity's grand entrance during The Ritual's climax truly is soul-stirring. Boasting a towering and skeletal elk-like body, Moder's design is incredibly innovative and profoundly unsettling. Where his head should be, Moder has a shrouded humanoid torso, its face devoid of all features, save for two glaring eyes. The way this animalistic creature is fused with a human-shaped upper body makes Moder come across as familiar but simultaneously monstrous.

Even though Moder was frightening long before he appeared, his flawless reveal cemented his reputation as one of the most petrifying monsters of the decade.
