10 MORE Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

2. Louise - Spring

Spring
Drafthouse Films

Subversive body-horror Spring opens with a young man, Evan, taking a sabbatical in Italy, where he falls for a mysterious woman, Louise. Though Spring is presented like a romcom, it's apparent there's something sinister about Louise when she disappears into the night and kills a local.

Now, anybody familiar with horror will assume Louise will be exposed as a conventional monster, like a vampire or a werewolf. However, though Louise's true form isn't shown for 75 minutes, it exceeds all expectations when it does arrive.

When Evan bursts into Louise's room unannounced, he discovers his girlfriend is a monstrous hybrid, covered with claws, flippers, tails, and tentacles. After Evan calms down (which takes a while), Louise reveals she's an ancient mutant who's absorbed the DNA of other creatures for millennia to stay alive.

Even though this bombshell is rattling, it's also surprisingly heartbreaking. Though Louise cared for Evan, she was scared of being with him, believing he wouldn't accept her if he saw her true form. Her chimera-like form is haunting, but looking at Evan's reaction is arguably worse, since Louise realises her greatest fear has come true.
