Any Saw fan should be familiar with John Kramer's MO. Even though the Jigsaw Killer seems ruthless, he never directly kills anybody throughout the franchise. Also, he would never intentionally cause the death of an innocent person, especially a child.

So, when Jigsaw tells Detective Matthews his son Daniel is taking part in his latest test, something seems amiss. When Matthews sees Daniel on a TV monitor, he asks Jigsaw where they are. The criminal mastermind reassures Matthews, informing the impatient detective that Daniel is in "a safe place".

Although Jigsaw sounds like he's being deliberately vague, he's letting Matthews know his son is inside the safe beside him, and the footage of Daniel on the monitor is pre-recorded. Sadly, this word-play goes right over Matthews' head, forcing him to go on a wild goose chase, which culminates in him becoming Jigsaw's next victim.

If Matthews and his squad waited a few hours for the safe to automatically unlock, they would've been able to rescue Daniel with ease. Sadly, Matthews never reunited with his son, since he didn't listen to Jigsaw.
