10 More Times The Movie Killer Was Hiding In Plain Sight

6. Martin Vanger - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is perhaps one of David Fincher's most underrated films; a superb and stylish thriller with a genius plot twist that keeps the viewer looking in completely the wrong direction for most of the runtime.

Disgraced investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and ultimate badass cyberpunk hacker Lisbeth Salander are hired by Henrik Vanger to locate his missing (and presumed dead) niece, Harriet. The tenacious pair uncover a series of murders stretching back 60 years, but how could only one man be behind the deaths?

Harriet's abusive father Gottfried is their killer and after his death, Martin, Harriet's brother, continues the killing spree, unaware that Harriet is still alive, having fled to England decades earlier. It's a brilliant piece of misdirection but there is one MASSIVE clue around the middle of the movie that points to Martin's guilt.

While hosting dinner for Blomkvist, Martin hears a strange sound, almost like the wind whistling through his house. He excuses himself to retrieve more wine, leaving Blomkvist in the dining room. It seems like a strange detail to focus on, but this is Fincher, and every tiny detail has meaning.

The 'wind' is actually the screams of Martin's next victim, held captive in his bespoke psycho dungeon beneath the house. It's here that he will attempt to hang Blomkvist at the film's climax - right before Salander shows up, golf club in hand, almost taking Martin's head clean off with one perfect swing. You'll never hear Enya in the same way again...
