Cloud Atlas is a rare example of a $140 million sci-fi epic spanning nearly 500 years, six different locations and a huge ensemble of characters which took a big swing and arguably resulted in neither a miss or a hit.

The 2012 film directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer received - on average - middling reviews across the board but with a less than enthusiastic audience who failed to turn up and see it in the cinema. Alongside failing to make back its budget by $10 million (and this is before even accounting for the marketing costs) it gained a very average 66% on the critic's Tomatometer and 66% again on the theatregoer's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, this average number is the result of a wide variety of reviews both praising the film for being a masterpiece like Roger Ebert who declared it was "one of the most ambitious films ever made" and those decrying it as - in the words of Mark Kermode - "an extremely honourable failure, but a failure". One thing is for certain, after watching the three hour epic you will probably love it or absolutely hate it.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
