There are two characters throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe who essentially sought to plunge the entire universe into darkness and essentially end all life everywhere. The first was Malekith the Dark Elf, followed by Dormammu, ruler of the Dark Dimension.

While both had similar endgames in mind, there was a difference in their motivation and reasoning. Malekith’s people thrived when the universe was darkest, so he did what he did for the survival of his own race. Dormammu however, seemingly wanted to destroy the universe just for the sake of it.

As ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu had power likely unequalled across the entire universe. However, apparently ruling over an entire dimension wasn’t enough so he set about merging his dimension with Earth in a move that would have killed everyone.

His attempts to plunge the entire universe into darkness, killing everyone everywhere were for no other reason than because he wanted to, and because he thought he could. He seemed to take joy in the suffering of others, and simply wanted to flex his power. All those would-be deaths for a glorified ego boost.
