Gladiator II certainly boasted one hell of a stacked ensemble cast, but did anyone expect to see a certain member of UK comedy royalty rock up for a quick appearance?
Little Britain star Matt Lucas has a small but memorable part in the film as the Colosseum's Master of Ceremonies - a public announcer for whatever brutal proceedings are taking place.
Lucas goes full, campy ham with his performance, as provides a stark contrast to the bloodshed unfolding around him.
On one hand he's clearly having fun with the part, but on the other, for any Brits watching, he also sticks out like a sore thumb in a movie that largely wants to be taken seriously.
As for why director Ridley Scott opted for such an odd and unexpected casting choice? Perhaps he's a long-time fan of Little Britain? All the same, it provides some amusing - if bizarre - levity in the middle of the mayhem, so why the heck not?
