2014 was a great year for the thriller. Sure, not everyone saw these films (Cold In July barely made a penny), but it was a great year regardless. Cold In July is one of the best of the bunch yet it shares a lot of similarities with films already on this list, in particular The Guest and The Drop. It is another in a long line of 80's-inflected revenge thrillers with great performances. The great performances in Cold In July come from Dexter's Michael C. Hall, Miami Vice's Don Johnson and the supremely underrated Sam Shepard. The film has many twists and turns and climaxes with a brutal shoot-out in an abandoned mansion. It is a very masculine movie that manages to blur the lines between the home invasion, crime, horror and thriller genres. The soundtrack is excellent and the chemistry between the three leads puts it over the edge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkyuV69YZcM One of the most unpredictable films of the year, Cold In July is well worth your time.
