6. The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant)
While you might argue that the final scene precludes this film from making the list, doing so would be missing the entire point of this beloved animated movie from Brad Bird. In the Iron Giant, the titular heroic alien robot comes to earth and befriends a young boy named Hogarth. Through a series of misunderstandings and government involvement, the metallic giant goes on a rampage against the army after he believes his young human friend has died. When a missile is fired at the town of Rockwell, it seems like their entire city is fated to perish. In a final scene that Batman and the guy from Heroes only wish they could match on an emotional level, our hero grabs the explosive and flies into the stratosphere, sacrificing himself for the town.
