10 Movie Concepts That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Somehow Did)

5. A Man Sat In His Car On His Own (Locke)

Ever sat in your car in the midst of a long arse journey and thought 'man, this would make a hell of a movie'?

Nope, neither did most of the population.

But, director Steven Knight and Tom Hardy aren't cut from the same cloth as the rest of us mere mortals and they felt that it was about time we were given the gift of one man driving around in his vehicle for 85 minutes.

Of course, the finished article contains a little more drama than this basic statement suggests.

Hardy's Ivan Locke is planted front and centre for the entirety of the feature, yet it is the audience who are reluctantly buckled-in and forced to witness his world disintergrate throughout the duration of his ride from Birmingham to London.

With any other actor behind the wheel, this film would have probably floundered, but Hardy ensured that you were fully invested in every twist that came off the back of yet another fateful phone call.

Throw into the mix Locke's constant battle with the ghost of his own absent father and you have the recipe for a film that - on the face of it - could have been a disaster, but instead turned into a bite-sized hidden gem.
