The Mummy, released in 1999 will soon be given a reboot. Should we rejoice this or not? Stephen Sommers created a trilogy between 1999 and 2008, and Universal Studios have said that the reboot will be released in 2016. Between 1999 and 2016 is a long time, but the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released in 2008. This is incredibly close to 2016 in film terms, and this immediately creates doubts over whether this is too soon. The first two Mummy films were amazing; scary, action packed and with an engaging plot. The third was nothing special, but it is still a part of a successful franchise. The reboot will apparently be set in the modern day, unlike the previous franchise which was set in the 1930s. Like the Fantastic Four this is speculation, and although the studio claims it will be a completely original take, it is hard not to be sceptical about the close timing between these franchises. Alex Kurtzman, who helped with the Star Trek reboot, will be directing the film, but it is hard to see this as anything more than an attempt to make money out of a franchise that died a relatively recent death with 2008s third film.
