The 1968 classic film has been rebooted and experienced a number of sequels, but Tim Burtons 2001 attempted reboot was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Although considerable time had passed between the original and this flawed remake, 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was still too close to this to be a viable remake. This is perhaps part of the reason for why Twentieth Century Fox opted to use a few prequel films before creating a true Planet of the Apes film. This year saw the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and it is clear that the studio is slowly working towards a complete reboot of the seminal sci-fi flick. The slow way in which Fox are pursuing this remake is in some ways laudable, as it will avoid diving headfirst into a poor remake. However, it also risks running out of steam, losing audiences with its complex history. The planet of the Apes franchise looks like it is set to last, with the original series spanning five films, and Twentieth Century Fox look set to rival this by constantly churning out prequels before giving us the finished product. In all likelihood the current franchise will be long lasting, and it has been well done, but is it all still too close to Tim Burtons poor 2001 film? What did you think? Which films would you include on this list? Anything you agree or disagree with? Let us know in the discussion section below!
