10 Movie Moments That Pissed Off Fanboys (That Were Actually Great)
2. Mad Max: Feminist Road
In perhaps some of the most hilariously misjudged reactions to a film in recent years, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road – not a sequel nor a prequel, but more of a ‘revisiting’ of the Australian director’s post-apocalyptic franchise – caused quite a stir amongst men’s rights activists.
Apparently duped by Fury Road’s trailers – chock-full of desert scenes, explosions and post-apocalyptic steampunk modes of transport and seemingly suggestive of ultra-masculine guy flick – manly men flocked to see the film only to be disappointed when it turned out that the film focused more on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa rather than Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky. Adding insult to injury, it emerged that Miller had invited Eve Ensler, the playwright behind The Vagina Monologues, onset to advise on issues of violence against women and the MRAs dubbed the film ‘Mad Max: Feminist Road’.
Despite some MRAs insistence that real men avoid the film for the sake of all things pure and masculine, Mad Max: Fury Road went on to receive glowing reviews from critics and viewers (some of them even male) proving that a female-focused action flick can be both successful and offer a fresh, contemporary take on an older franchise.
