10 Movie Plots Solved In One Simple Move

5. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

the hunchback of notre dameThe Plot: This is specifically the Disney version. Judge Claude Frollo is a fanatic who wants to purge the world of gypsies. After curb stomping on in front of a church, he is forced to take the gypsy's child in, and raises him as a slave--the titular hunchback, Quasimodo. Frollo spends the rest of the movie abusing Quasi, burning people alive, and lusting over a girl who in the original book might just be fourteen. The Solution: Fire Frollo. He curbed stomped a gypsy in front of a church! I know France had a very lose legal system back in the day, but I think even judges weren't allowed to casually murder people. No one, not even his superiors like the Archdeacon, seem to like him very much. How does this guy have a job? Then again, this is a problem that happens only in the Disney film version, since, in the original text, Frollo doesn't kill Quasimodo's mom. In fact, Quasimodo's mom never dies at all. Frollo takes the deformed child out of genuine compassion, and treats him like his own son. Of course, if they made Frollo into a complex, morally ambiguous character, it would be harder to cheer when he gets dropped into the fiery pits of Hell. Still, there are plenty of people in France who'd do a better job than Frollo. I hear this one guy Javert is in town.
