10 Movie Remakes That Are Actually Worth Watching

1. The Little Shop Of Horrors

La Totale True Lies
Warner Bros.

The Original: Legendary as “The Film Shot In Two Days”, Roger Corman’s 1960 cheapie tells the story of Seymour Krelborn (Jonathan Haze), a florist’s assistant (and full-time loser) who finally gains respect for his “unusual” new plant, little realizing it needs blood to survive.

The Remake: Rebooted as a musical, this 1986 version outdoes its predecessor in every way, from Lyle Conway’s incredible creature design to the casting, with Rick Moranis a perfect Seymour and Ellen Greene (reprising her stage role) just right as his would-be girlfriend. The supporting cast is also excellent, with amusing cameos from Bill Murray, John Candy and Christopher Guest. Steve Martin, as the dentist, should’ve gotten his own movie.

In this version, the plant (“Audrey II”) speaks with the voice of Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops, and in one of the standout scenes performs “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space”, which became the first song containing profanity to receive an Oscar nomination (it lost out to Top Gun – boo!).

“You can keep The Thing, keep the It, keep the creature, they don’t mean sh*t!” sings Audrey II. They really don’t remake them like they used to, do they?
