There's nothing Hollywood loves more than a sequel, because why roll the dice on a risky new IP when you can just go back to a proven success and give the audience more of what they dug the first time?

Yet as straight-forward as the economics of this might seem, sometimes announced sequels end up languishing in development hell for one reason or a dozen, enough that all but the most diehard of fans eventually give up hope of them ever actually getting made. And yet, where the following ten long-awaited sequels are concerned, each is now finally happening once and for all.

Whether due to a studio regime change, the cast and crew all finally becoming available, or the original filmmaker simply coming up with a great idea, these much buzzed-about sequels are all definitely getting made.

From sequels which were just announced - for realsies this time - to those which have already started filming or at least have their shooting dates set in stone, it seems like fans' prayers have been answered at long last.

Now it's just the small matter of these sequels actually living up to all that hype...

10. 28 Years Later

Despite releasing over 20 years ago, Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic horror - don't call it a zombie film! - 28 Days Later has remained a much-loved fave among genre fans, and sequel 28 Weeks Later was also a bit of a pleasant surprise.

Given their solid box office success, and the latter's sequel-baiting ending, it seemed like a given that 28 Months Later would soon enough materialise. Yet despite Boyle and original writer Alex Garland trying to get a third film made for more than a decade, for a myriad of reasons it never came together. Until now.

At the start of the year, Boyle and Garland confirmed that they're actively developing a sequel - now called 28 Years Later - which is presently being shopped around to distributors. Boyle will direct while Garland will write, with the budget said to be around $75 million - a major leap from the prior film's more modest budgets of $8 million and $15 million, respectively.

Furthermore, the duo plan to make this the first entry into a new trilogy of movies, with Garland set to pen all three. Though no story details are yet known, the title suggests it'll pick up almost three decades after the original film with the Rage Virus continuing to ravage the globe. And original star Cillian Murphy even recently expressed interest in reprising his protagonist role from the first film, so here's hoping Boyle and Garland make it happen.
