10 Movie Sequels That Failed To Recapture The Magic
2. Speed 2: Cruise Control
Speed. It's in the name, With a name like that, you'd have to expect a breakneck pace, non-stop action, and a level of intensity higher that refuses to let up.
Speed 2: Cruise Control. What does that sound like? On one hand, Speed 2 sounds even faster and even more relentless than the first, right? On the other hand, Cruise Control sounds more like its meandering at a steady pace, slow even. Refusing to go any faster and hands at ten and two at all times. So which is it? Spoiler alert, it wouldn't be on this list if it fell in to the first category.
Sandra Bullock returns and this time the (lack of) action takes place aboard a cruise ship that's been hijacked and programmed to head right towards an oil tanker. This is the most glaringly obvious issue. Cruise ships are not fast. The fact that no one questioned the setting during production is a mystery. That being said, of course they couldn't just rip off the original and rehash that on a train for example, but other than Sandra Bullock's character, what ties this to Speed and makes it a sequel?
It's not the only issue though however. Uninteresting characters, a serious lack of fun action sequences, and camera work so choppy and frantic it seems like it was shot with the intention of giving the viewer seasickness, all add up to a boring, pedestrian ride.
