10 Movies That Just Got Cancelled
6. Liarmouth
Legendary filmmaker John Waters was preparing to direct his first feature film in over 20 years with an adaptation of his own black comedy novel Liarmouth, which was set to star Aubrey Plaza as the titular con artist.
The film entered development in 2022 with Plaza being cast in early 2024 for a planned shoot later that year, though Waters himself stressed that the money hadn't yet been put in place for filming to happen. And last month, Waters sadly provided a frustrating update, that the film wasn't happening because he and his team couldn't find anyone to finance the production.
While it's fair to say that Waters' movies are niche-with-a-capital-N and the furthest thing from a safe bet in the conservative current Hollywood climate, it's also a shame that one of cinema's most singular filmmakers is being denied the opportunity to make another movie in the twilight era of his career.
Waters added that he hopes circumstances might change in the future, but given that he's already 78 years of age, the clock is a-ticking.
