10 Movies That Made Subtle Retcons They Hoped You Wouldn't Notice

1. Crime Boss "Marsha" Becomes "Marshall" - The Hangover Part III

Near the end of the original Hangover movie, drug dealer "Black Doug" (Mike Epps) learns that he accidentally sold roofies to Alan (Zach Galifianakis), to which he says, "Marsha's gonna be pissed off with me on that one."

This seems all well and good until we actually meet "Marsha" in The Hangover Part III, though the character is now a man called Marshall, as played by the definitely-not-female John Goodman.

The script positively refers to the character as Marsha, so we're left to assume that Todd Phillips and company had a change of heart while writing the third film and decided to make the series' overarching antagonist a man rather than a woman.

At least the two names sound so similar that the filmmakers easily got away with it, and let's be honest - most casual fans of the franchise probably forgot about that initial namedrop anyway.

Still, having a female antagonist presiding over all these man-children - played by another wildly overqualified A-lister like Glenn Close, no less - would've actually been a pretty neat twist.
