10 Movies That Pissed People Off Before They Even Released
2. Madame Web

What the likes of the Venom franchise, with the addition of Morbius and others to follow, were supposed to create was Sony's own cinematic universe to rival that of Marvel Studios' or DC's. By the release of the fifth film of the SSU (Sony's Spider-Man Universe), all that had been achieved was to send expectations through the floor.
Madame Web followed directly after the critical and commercial flop that was Morbius. That, plus the fact that building a universe around Spider-Man characters without a Spider-Man was never going to work, meant that the film never had a chance.
Even without that, though, and even if expectations for S.J. Clarkson's outing were reasonable, the trailer would have sent them crashing back down again. There was nothing to be excited about from the first two minutes of footage, but there was one line of dialogue in particular that the internet grabbed hold of and didn't let go.
"He was in the Amazon with my Mom when she was researching spiders right before she died."
That clunky dialogue, cramming a ridiculous amount of exposition into one sentence, immediately made Madame Web a laughing stock, and John Mulaney even took a shot while he was presenting at the 2024 Academy Awards. No one would have expected to hear Madame Web at the Oscars, so that's at least something, right?
