10 Movies They Keep Saying Will Be Made (That Never Will)
2. Tron 3
2010’s Tron: Legacy was a big hit for Disney, grossing $400 million worldwide and spawning talks of a sequel ever since. Despite director Joseph Kosinski explaining that the film would follow Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde’s characters as they returned to the real world, the movie was never officially greenlit and was all but scrapped in 2015 after Disney’s Tomorrowland bombed at the box-office.
But that wasn’t the end of the Tron sequel. Known to be called Tron: Ascension, the film was described as being in a “cryogenic freeze” by Kosinski – not quite dead, not really alive. Eventually the franchise’s star Jeff Bridges said that he thought the film should be the first ever in VR, and that a script was written and ready to go.
When news came in 2017 that Disney was actually planning on moving forward with Tron 3, it was a surprise to many that the film wasn’t going to be a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy, but would instead be “built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script.” Jared Leto is currently talks to star in this semi-reboot, although no writer or director has been hired.
If we know anything about Tron 3 – and look how long it took between the Tron and Tron: Legacy films – it’s a safe bet that even Jared Leto can’t get this light-cycle off the ground.
