10 Movies Where People Died On Set

3. Top Gun

The Crow
Paramount

Almost considered required viewing, this 1986 classic features Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, a memorable soundtrack and some of the most adrenaline-fuelled flying scenes in film history.

In order to get some of these shots, the director shot on board an actual US aircraft carrier, famously paying a substantial amount of money to have it alter course to finish filming a specific scene. The film studio also fronted low five-figure sums for every hour that they had the fighter jets flown and operated for their cameras outwith their normal duties.

And it can't be argued that all this financial outlay didn't pay off as the film cleaned up at the box office, making more than $340 million in profit.

However, a well-respected aerobatic pilot named Art Scholl lost his life during filming. He was attempting a "flat spin" when his aircraft dropped beyond the point where he was expected to pull up. Art came over the radio stating he had a problem before his aircraft crashed into the sea, resulting in his death.

Neither his body nor his aircraft were recovered and the film is dedicated to his memory.
