8. Vanilla Sky
Despite Tom Cruise being the biggest actor in the world over the last twenty years, there are still swarms of people who despise everything he's been in. He's made some very bad movies over the years (Knight and Day, Valykrie, Cocktail) and some genuine masterpieces (Magnolia, Risky Business, Collateral), but Vanilla Sky (and another film that appears later on this list) have Cruise at his most polarising. Vanilla Sky is a mind-bending piece of sci-fi that is as ridiculous as it is entertaining. The film, and its director, Cameron Crowe have been accused of pretension with its absurd plot and egotistical lead character, but some people genuinely love the absurdism of it, and its wonderful soundtrack.
