Robert Zemeckis' mid-nineties polarizing hit has been re-evaluated as many times as any other movie. It's been called everything from a unique masterpiece to the embodiment of absolutely nothing and everything in between. Since the massive critical and commercial success on its initial release, the popularity the movie endured has turned more towards loathing and the love for the gormless Forrest has been decreasing as time goes by. For every person who thinks it's nauseating melodrama, you'll find someone who says it's their favourite movie, everybody from critics to casual movie fans have a strong opinion on Forrest Gump one way or the other, perhaps because the character and his quotes became such a part of pop culture. The film has also received a simultaneous backlash and endorsement because of the links to conservatism in the movie, which has led to it being embraced by the right and shunned by liberals who have interpreted the film in that particular way.
