10 Movies You Either Love Or Hate

5. Antichrist

antichrist31.01.2013 There's no denying that Lars Von Trier is one of the most contentious filmmakers in the world. All of his films have received a split reception and the man himself is something of an attention-seeking egomaniac and every word that leaves his lips has to be treated with suspicion. When Antichrist debuted at Cannes, it caused an outcry and fiercely divided reactions. Some championed the film's artistry and acting, but the violence and attitude towards women displayed in the film outraged many. Antichrist was intended to be Von Trier's homage to legendary director Andrei Tarkovsky, but instead ended up being a self-indulgent rambling about how much Von Trier hates women. Von Trier prides himself on being something of a provocateur, but in reality, he's just a bad filmmaker who just so happens to be able to create an excellent shot. Despite all the mesmerising visuals of the movie, it is undeniably repulsive and Von Trier continues to get away with offensive content in his movies all in the name of 'art'. It is no coincidence that Von Trier's best movie - Melancholia - is by far his best movie. But with all that said, many still think the film is something of a masterpiece, intentionally dark, horrifying and provocative.
