10 Movies You’ll Be Shocked To Hear Were Huge Box Office Hits

4. Schindler's List (1993) - $321.2m

In an industry where big-budget popcorn flicks dominate the box office, prestige dramas aren't usually known for their strong box office performance. However, Steven Spielberg's masterpiece bucked the trend to become one of the biggest box office successes of 1993. Despite the weighty subject matter and often heart-wrenching content, audiences were undeterred and flocked to the theater to watch what is now regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. Despite winning seven Academy Awards from twelve nominations, awards buzz rarely translates into strong commercial performance and even though the movie never rose any higher than fourth place at the domestic box office, it spent a combined total of nineteen weeks inside the top ten. Over 70% of the box office total came from overseas, with Germany unsurprisingly proving to be the movie's biggest international market. Spielberg's powerful drama went on to become the fourth highest-grossing movie of 1993, and was out-earned only by crowd-pleasing hits The Fugitive, Mrs Doubtfire and the director's own Jurassic Park.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
