10 Offbeat Superhero Films You MUST See

Super James Gunn
20th Century Fox

"I'm an apex predator."

An argument could easily be made that this film is not a superhero movie and there is credence to that. It isn't treated like a superhero movie and there are few tropes to be found, but with a strange source miraculously transforming three kids into super teens and the ensuing bus hurling action, it was close enough to secure Fantastic 4's Josh Trank as director.

Bullied at school and beaten at home, Andrew Detmer's life is absolutely miserable. This misery is fairly standard for a superhero story but parental figures are normally lost idols or nurturing forces. Andrew's connection to humanity is his mother and she is hanging on to her life by a thread.

Having no friends of his own, his cousin Matt invites him to a party and after he and his camera get into trouble he is called upon to film something strange Matt and his friend Steve found in the woods. Cue some underground, creepy glowing stuff. The three teens get telekinetic powers that eventually make them fly, but not before some Jackass style pranks.

The slow build in tensions is well executed though the motivation for Andrew's ultimately evil actions is pretty thin. This makes the list for its fly on the wall style of cinematography and the strained but loving relationship between Andrew and Matt. The bittersweet ending also marks a deviation from convention.
