10 Problems Terminator Genisys Sequel Must Address

1. Develop A Stronger Underlying Theme

In addition to all the great action, the first two Terminator movies were surprisingly rich in subtext: they prefigured the Matrix by some years when it came to the high price humanity might pay for the rush to technological advancement and artificial intelligence, while asking audiences to question the established notions of heroics in the context of a strong, empowered woman.

Terminator Genisys moves away from the subtext of gender and technological responsibility and stumps for an underlying theme which has been done to death in recent years - our obsession with social media. It's a rehash of an idea which we've already seen this year in Kingsman: The Secret Service, where the villain also had a masterplan to kill off humanity using devices they willingly adopt into their lives.

Perhaps the only interesting concept from Terminator Genisys is the idea that, as timelines become distorted through constant changes, memory becomes fragmented between different possible chronologies. Unfortunately, Genisys handles this badly, but at least it's a concept which could be explored with more coherence if a sequel ends up in the pipeline.

What other aspects of Terminator Genisys do you think could be improved upon in a sequel? Why not let us know in the comments?
