The Criticism: Batman V Superman’s Lex Luthor was outlined as a highly-agitated, God-hating mad scientist. Thanks to Jesse Eisenberg’s off-pitch performance, he instead resembled an overly-caffeinated and petulant child that was neither fearsome nor familiar to fans.

Why It’s Questionable: It’s hard to blame Jesse Eisenberg for doing what he was told - Lex Luthor was poorly written from the beginning and none of his weird personality quirks were going to change that. It wasn’t so much his performance that was lacking, it was just that his performance was meant to be an iconic comic book villain.

Instead of going with the calm and collected businessman version of Luthor, Batman V Superman updated him as a millenial tech genius. This is out of character for Luthor and this miscalculation of his most basic personality traits caused Eisenberg’s misguided performance to suffer as a result. Taken out of comic lore, however, it's really not deserving of all the hate.
