10 Really Dumb Moments In Otherwise Flawless Horror Films
6. Freddy Killing Nancy's Mother - A Nightmare On Elm Street
A Nightmare On Elm Street is one of the greatest horror films of the 1980s, but the ending is kind of a mess. There was a major disagreement during production as to whether the last scene should be happy or sad, so the result is a strange mix. Nancy refuses to believe in Freddy, he disappears, and everything is fine. Except then out of nowhere, Freddy's back. So wait, did Nancy wake up, walk out the door, and then start dreaming again? What's going on? The most common interpretation is that the entire last 20 minutes was a dream. When we thought Nancy pulled Freddy into the real world, she was actually still asleep, and she remains in that state at the end. What's up with Freddy killing Nancy's mom, then? Prior to this, it seems Freddy only kills the person dreaming, not anyone else. It's not like he's just doing it to scare Nancy, either, as she doesn't even see it happen. The ending should have a huge impact on the audience, but instead it just leaves us confused. Probably the worst thing about it, though, is just the special effect of Freddy grabbing Marge and pulling her through the window. It's so obviously a dummy that it looks like a Saturday Night Live sketch, and so the film ends with an unintentional laugh.
