Just when you thought the exorcism movie had nothing left to offer, along comes Argentine horror When Evil Lurks to make guff like The Exorcist: Believer look like, well, Exorcist II: The Heretic.

Director Demián Rugna (Terrified) does a stunning job here of fusing intense disquiet with brutality and surprisingly rich thematic concerns, all inside of a balanced, well acted package that's incredibly tough to shake.

This isn't your bump-in-the-night rollercoaster ride of a horror movie - it's grim, nasty, and a major breath of fresh air for the subgenre, honestly.

Ezequiel Rodríguez gives an outstanding performance in the lead role, and the impressively revolting practical gore effects will surely rattle around in your brain for a long damn time.

For anyone craving a truly mean, uncompromising horror that holds nothing back, When Evil Lurks has more than got you covered. Just make sure you've got something fun and frothy to watch afterwards as a palate cleanser.
