10 Recent Horror Movies You Should Watch Knowing NOTHING

2. The Substance

It's been basically impossible to ignore the marketing buzz about The Substance being "the most insane horror film of the year," but for once it's not just breathless film festival hyperbole - it really is that wild.

Coralie Fargeat's (Revenge) feminist body horror romp is a sandblaster to the face for anyone tired of by-the-numbers genre fare - a daring, provocative, visually stunning, and brilliantly acted offering that's clearly taken some serious influence form peak-era David Cronenberg.

Demi Moore gives the performance of her career - and one that'd be courting serious Oscar consideration in a just world - while Margaret Qualley is equally terrific, in a challenging but brilliantly crafted treatise on beauty standards, female bodily autonomy, ageism, and so much more.

For anyone complaining about a lack of originality in the film industry, you owe it to yourself (and the filmmakers) to throw your support this way, and you can have the definitive experience by reading not a word more about the shocks and surprises The Substance has in store.
