2. Virginia - Happy Gilmore 2
Happy Gilmore 2 delivered one of the most unexpected deaths of the year in its opening montage, when Happy (Adam Sandler) reveals that his beloved wife Virginia (Julie Bowen) was killed when Happy accidentally hit her with one of his golf balls during a tournament, on Mother's Day no less.
Virginia is dead literally three minutes into the movie - a colossal bummer for anyone who liked the character, and it honestly just kicks the movie off on a hugely sour note.
Perhaps Julie Bowen's schedule only allowed her to appear for a brief cameo, but couldn't they have just had her temporarily leave Happy instead?
Killing her off seems so definite and needlessly mean spirited, in a comedy movie no less, ensuring she's added to the long list of female movie characters who were swiftly "fridged" in the sequel.
