Barely a week goes by without a video game adaptation being announced that will inevitably go nowhere.

Video game movies are a tough nut to crack for many reasons, not least that they're preceded by the toxic "video game curse," that Hollywood has yet to deliver a truly great film based on a game.

Even so, it was hard not to be intrigued when, this past March, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions announced that an adaptation of last year's smash hit samurai actioner Ghost of Tsushima was in the works.

Better yet, John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski was hired for the gig, and given his indisputable action chops, it's tough to imagine few filmmakers better-equipped to do the source material justice.

The biggest hurdle will ultimately be Stahelski's availability - he's currently in post-production on John Wick: Chapter 4 and a fifth film is already in the works, while he's also attached to helm the Henry Cavill-starring Highlander reboot.

Given Stahelski's unique action pedigree, Sony may be reluctant to replace him, and so it's easy to picture Ghost of Tsushima joining the long list of intriguing video game movies that never actually goes before cameras.

If John Wick continues to go from strength to strength, then that's likely to keep him busy for the foreseeable future, and so Sony could end up waiting past the point that a Ghost of Tsushima movie actually makes sense - especially if the game somehow doesn't get a timely sequel.
