10 Scariest Horror Movies Set At Halloween
2. Ghostwatch
Before The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity were even a twinkle in their directors’ eyes we had Ghostwatch: a faux documentary aired by the BBC on Halloween night in 1992 that duped many an unsuspecting viewer – a lot of them kids – into thinking it was real.
Supposedly broadcasting live from suburban Greater London, Ghostwatch featured a team led by kids’ TV presenter Sarah Greene conducting a paranormal investigation at a seemingly normal family home plagued by supernatural goings-on and several evil entities including the malevolent ghost of a suicide victim whose cats feasted on his dead body and is nicknamed Pipes and a Victorian era baby farmer-turned-murderess called Mother Seddons.
Drawing inspiration from real-life British hauntings and horrors like the Enfield Poltergeist and baby killer Amelia Dyer and with the recognisable Greene (along with other famous faces including Michael Parkinson and Craig Charles) doing a pretty convincing act of increasing bewilderment and terror, it had enough credibility to scare the wits out of millions of Brits.
Of course, it could never inspire the kind of mass panic it did on that fateful Halloween night in 1992, but it’s nevertheless a brilliantly creepy and well-crafted ghost story that’s sure to spark a bit of long-forgotten fear in anyone who witnessed it first time around.
