Everyone's jaw dropped when this happened - just watch all of the reaction videos.

The Safdie Brothers' anxiety-inducing masterpiece tells the story of Howard Ratner (a brilliant Adam Sandler), a jeweller and gambling addict who simply cannot beat his problem. Every time he's close to paying off the debts he owes to a group of loan sharks (one of whom is his brother-in-law), he keeps digging himself deeper into a hole of his own making.

Things come to a terrifying head in the film's final act, where basketball player Kevin Garnett (playing himself in an impressive debut performance) gives Ratner more than enough money to cover his debts, but, Howard being Howard, he instead places all of the money on a massive new bet. When the loan sharks arrive, he locks them in his store and forces them to watch the basketball with him.

Eventually, miraculously, Ratner's bet pays off and he wins over $1 million. Overjoyed, Ratner frees the loan sharks... and the psychopathic Phil (Keith William Richards) shoots Ratner dead in a rage. Perhaps the key thing that makes this so startling is the way the mood switches from exuberant joy to violent tragedy like this, and also, it's Adam Sandler. Regardless of his hit-or-miss filmography he's an important part of many childhoods, and it's bruising to see him die so violently.
