10 Shocking Movie Deaths That Came Out Of NOWHERE
5. House Of The Devil - Megan
House of the Devil is an underrated slice of awesomeness from the great Ti West, a gripping slow-burn horror with a delightfully retro feel. It features many fabulous moments, including one of the biggest filmmakers of today being gruesomely killed off in shocking style.
Before she became perhaps the most successful female filmmaker working right now, Greta Gerwig was primarily an actress, and she has a small but memorable role in this film as Megan, a friend of protagonist Samantha (Jocelin Donahue). After dropping Samantha off at a creepy house to carry out a babysitting assignment, Megan is startled by a stranger (A.J. Bowen), who gives her a lighter. They talk briefly, and once he realizes that she's not the 'babysitter', he abruptly shoots her in the head.
It's the kind of sudden death that'll make you jump a foot in the air. Sure, the stranger seems creepy at first, but West cleverly lulls the viewer into a false sense of security by distracting them with an amiable, drawn-out conversation, so the concluding gunshot seemed to come out of nowhere.
