Assault On Precinct 13 launched John Carpenter’s career, and features most of his common themes; it's set in an isolated location, it’s a modern western and it’s got a badass synth score.

While it’s not all that graphic with the bloodshed, there is one scene that still causes gasps to this day. The moment that really sets the plot in motion is when a young girl is murdered by a gang while buying ice cream, causing her father to seek revenge on the gang. The shocking bluntness of this sequence catches viewers off guard, and it’s tough to imagine the film without it.

Carpenter was only in this twenties while shooting the movie, and looking back he regrets filming it so explicitly. "We had a scene where a little girl gets killed with a gun, and it was pretty horrible at the time - explicit. I don’t think I’d do it again but I was young and stupid."

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
