10 Shocking Twists That Would Ruin 2016's Biggest Movies

10. It's All Part Of Thanos' Bigger Plan - Captain America: Civil War

Civil War is the Marvel event. An epic comic crossover that divide the company's heroes and pitted them against each other, it's a seismic story with far-reaching consequences, which should to some degree explain the hype around a movie that would otherwise be called Captain America 3. Interestingly for a movie in the MCU based on such beloved source material, Captain America: Civil War will arrive with minimal foreshadowing (at least compared to other big Marvel films), the sum total of preceding easter eggs being a few conversations about doing "the right thing". That's a strong move from Marvel, meaning Cap 3 should work on its own stand-alone merits. The danger, however, is that it'll be waylaid by setting up later films - not just Black Panther and Spider-Man, but also Avengers: Infinity War. In theory there should be no direct link between Civil War and the wider cosmic world that'll be the backdrop for Avengers 3, but the same was true of Avengers: Age Of Ultron. And, as this is likely to be the last time we see many of the key Avengers (outside of post-credits scenes) before the big showdown with Thanos, it'd be very tempting from a storytelling stand-point to have the next team-up seeded here, or even have the Mad Titan somehow directly tied into the Earth-bound events. But while it'd help Marvel's grand storytelling and no doubt give us a lot to talk about, it would cheapen Civil War itself as a movie. And it needs to be the Marvel movie.
