Last Entry: Texas Chainsaw 3D

Compared to the pretty tight continuity of, say, the last two franchises on this list (Child's Play and Saw), the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is a bit of a wild mess. The late Tobe Hooper followed up his original iconic film 12 years later with 1986's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, but after that came two further sequels in 1990 and 1994 that contradicted each other as much as they stood at odds with the timeline of the original two films.

In 2003, the series underwent a complete reboot to start anew, and was followed up by its own prequel three years later. Then in 2013, the reboot series was wiped away with Texas Chainsaw 3D, a sequel to the original film that also chose to ignore the other sequels. And now here we are four years later with Leatherface on the way, a prequel to Hooper's film that involves exploring the origin of everyone's favorite chainsaw-wielding maniac.

Starring Stephen Dorff, Lili Taylor, and Finn Jones, Leatherface will follow a group of teens - one of whom is the member of the Sawyer clan that will become the titular character - after they've escaped from a mental institution, with Dorff's Sheriff chasing after them.

The mystery surrounding who it is is part of the film, and fans will soon get to discover for themselves when the film releases on October 20th.
